Back-to-school shopping can be an exciting and frustrating experience for parents and kids alike. The prospect of the new school year and the new clothes, supplies, and other gear that come along with it can be fun. Disagreements about costs, needs verses wants, and who makes the decisions can lead to eye rolls, debate, and even arguments.
Nathan Dungan, a thought leader in teaching money values to kids, recently offered five steps to a successful back-to-school shopping experience. He recommends a proactive discussion and planning session, a teaching moment regarding marketing and consumer pressure, and a budget where both the parents and kids have input. I thought his recommendations were right on the money, and a proactive approach should help make the experience fun instead of frustrating.
