At KHC, we strive to help our clients identify their life’s goals and build plans to achieve them. In recent meetings, we have been focusing on clarifying your goals. Most of us have probably heard that goals need to be “SMART” – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. For some of us, establishing SMART goals in our life – such as a child’s college education, care of elderly parents, travel, where we live – works well. For others, it might seem like additional work and stress to set these goals in both our personal and professional lives.
Let’s view the idea of goals from a different perspective. We ran across the statement “goals are dreams with a deadline”, and starting with dreams seems much more invigorating. Dreaming is typically not encouraged in the business world, but why can’t you dream in your personal life? And isn’t that where we should start? As advisers and wealth coaches, we strive to help you get where you want to go. But if you don’t start with your dreams, how do you know where you want to go, whether it’s in your personal or professional life? What are your dreams of what your life should be? How do you want to spend your time, talents and financial wealth? What’s really important to you? Dreams aren’t just for children; they can be powerful tools for us as adults to move toward the life we want.
The word “dreams” tends to encourage us to be creative and take a long term view. Goals sometimes sound too much like work! Dreams are a powerful idea – Martin Luther King, Jr. rarely talked about “goals,” but rather energized people with talk of “dreams.” But if we stop at the dream, nothing will happen. Adding deadlines or timeframes to our dreams makes them more real and more achievable.
Why are we so focused on your dreams and goals? If we are to help you in Making Life Count!®, your dreams with deadlines (goals) are the foundation. Research shows that by documenting and communicating your goals to others, you are far more likely to achieve them. We’re here to help!
